Five Steps to Writing an Essay
Five Steps to Writing an EssayDo you want to write an essay? How many of you are tempted to simply keep an essay writer to do the work for you? If you keep a college writing guide handy, that is great, but when you have a whole semester of essays to complete, and no time to write them, there is just no way around it. You need to learn how to write an essay, and here are five steps to help you with that task. The first step to write an essay is to come up with a topic. Topics can range from past events to current events, to your favorite sports team. Use your subject as a springboard to show your creativity, knowledge, and emotions. Use your topic to help focus you and keep you focused on the essay. The second step to writing an essay is to think through your topic. Write about whatever you think is important enough to write about. As you put together a rough draft, notice the big picture and take notes on the big issues that come to mind when writing your essay. Then, go back and add o r remove anything you may need to change. The third step to writing an essay is to jot down everything you can think of that relates to your topic. While doing this, remember that you will need to practice your essay writing skills at all times. Use your topic to learn how to make sentences flow smoothly, and do not forget that as you write, your goal is to provide your reader with a clear and concise statement of your opinion or belief. When you reach that point, stop and reflect on your topic for a moment. If you cannot make an accurate statement of your opinion, your writing is not going to be as good as it could be.The fourth step to writing an essay is to revise. After you write down everything you can think of, review and re-write. Try to find and use more information, and use the information that you do have carefully. The fifth step to writing an essay is to summarize your entire point. This final step should come naturally, but if you feel like you need to organize and presen t your thoughts, organize yourself first. Take a moment to think about the biggest point you are trying to get across, and then make a short list of the things you think are important. Add these things to your essay, and then go back and include everything else you think should be in your summary. Many people write an essay by trying to piece things together to form a coherent statement. That can be fine, but it is much easier to write an essay by writing each paragraph on its own. You should have one paragraph to represent each point, and that should be your headline for the entire essay. Make sure to capitalize and spell your name correctly, and then make a short sentence to express what the first paragraph was trying to convey. The fifth step to writing an essay is to make sure that you have an original point, and you should try to argue that point as clearly and eloquently as possible. If you make yourself understood and remember to use proper grammar, you will be writing an impre ssive essay!
